Course Description

Getting the right fit between the client and the manual wheelchair is an essential part of the prescription process. This full day course covers clinical aspects of manual wheelchair prescription, and provides hands-on investigation of manual wheelchair features.

Topics covered include:

• Measuring a client for a manual wheelchair
• Clinical reasoning in manual wheelchair assessment
• Product knowledge and manual wheelchair feature update
• Transportation and handling of manual wheelchairs
• Environmental considerations and constraints

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the training day participants will be able to:

• accurately measure and record the dimensions of the wheelchair user
• identify the key factors in a holistic wheelchair assessment
• identify the styles and features of commercially available manual wheelchairs and apply these to individual needs
• expand their knowledge of commercially available vehicle transportation options for users and carers
• demonstrate safe wheelchair handling and lifting procedures
• understand the importance of a maintenance checklist for wheelchairs to educate clients.
• be aware of the relevance of environmental considerations as part of the wheelchair assessment process.

Early Bird Offers

*Early bird discounts are available for those who have booked/paid 3 weeks before course commencement. Discounts are also available for groups or organisations registering 5 or more participants.

Cancellation & Refunds

When a cancellation is unavoidable:

• request a refund up to 7 days prior to the course (less 10% admininstration fee)
• request a postponement to another time withing 6 months

The ILC reserves the right to cancel a course when there are unforeseen circumstances. Notification of cancellation will be given by phone. If we cannot place the applicant in another course, we will refund the full amount.

The ILC is accessible for people with a disability. Additional learning support during training and assessment can be arranged with prior notice.

Katrina Smith

B.App.Sc.OT, Cert IV Training & Assessment

Katrina has worked in health as an Occupational Therapist for over 23 years. She has a broad background in rehabilitation including neurology, spinal cord injury, HIV/AIDS and chronic pain management. Katrina has a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
